The new Tech Suiting Anorak Blazer With Zip Off Vest from Resort 2026 features a drawstring waist that reminds me of an older design from Fall 2018. That one came in blue and tan, and although it lacks the new jacket’s removable hooded dicky, I think the shape still looks modern!

This texture reminds me of older looks from Tibi’s Fall 2018 and Fall 2019 collections, which had similar nylon quilting elements. Denim skirts

Every few years, Tibi releases a new take on the classic denim skirt, and this year it’s the Classic Denim Sculpted Silke Skirt. I haven’t seen this in person yet, and I’m curious to feel the material (what makes it silk-like? fabric content is 100% cotton… or is “silke” describing something else?) but the silhouette reminds me of the 2022 Classic Wash Denim Skirt that’s already hanging in my closet.

This older skirt comes up for resale all the time, especially in the washed black color. I think some people have issues with the front slit, which extends to just above the knee, but I like that sexy detail.

They’re touting the fabric, which I cannot speak to, but the color and shape reminds me of the Summer 2022 T-Shirt Sleeveless Dress that I already own and love! That older piece is made of 100% cotton, which does tend to stretch over time, so the new version might be superior in that regard (“designed in an Italian super-stretch interlock knit engineered to retain its shape”) but personally I prefer the natural fibers anyway.

Well, today I’m talking about one of my all-time favorite fashion collaborations: the Spring 2021 co-ed line from Dries van Noten, inspired by the art of Len Lye.

I’ll start out with a brief introduction to both parties, Dries and Len, then share some research around their collaboration, before finishing up with a whole bunch of resale recommendations I found for you. By the end, I think you’ll be as big a fan of this collection as I am!

Who is Dries van Noten?

Dries van Noten is of my favorite living (albeit recently retired) designers. “I’m known for color and prints and embroideries,” he told Vogue in 2007. “Normally the more clashing it is, the more that I like it.” And suffice to say, I’m a fan, too!

Van Noten famously arose as part of the “Antwerp 6,” a cohort of Belgian fashion designers who graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1980-1981, including Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, Marina Yee, and my boy Dries. This article from 1st Dibs provides some good background on the group:

[T]he designers ignited something of a movement in 1986, when they loaded the back of a rental van with their designs and drove to London. The creators, each with a distinct approach to fashion, caught the attention of the British press with their collections of unusual garments, considered radical and avant garde for the time. Their designs were a hit, and since the press had difficulty pronouncing their names, the group became known as the Antwerp Six.1

Van Noten is arguably the most famous among his peers. He launched his menswear collection in 1986, and debuted his first women’s collection in 1993. And he’s done two menswear and two womenswear per year pretty much ever since.2

In 2018, he sold the majority share of his company to the Spanish conglomerate Puig, which also owns Charlotte Tilbury, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Carolina Herrera, among others. Van Noten stayed on as chief creative officer, until he announced his retirement last year in 2024. Julian Klausner has since replaced him at the helm, to mixed reviews.

Who is Len Lye?

Len Lye (1901-1980) was a New Zealand-born artist who pioneered experimental film and kinetic sculpture. He lived in Samoa for a little while and developed an appreciation for indigenous art, and then he basically stowed away on a ship to London in the 1920s, where he joined a community of artists. Unable to afford a camera, Lye made movies by painting directly on to the film. He experimented with different dyes and implements to get the patterns he wanted. The results are shockingly modern, as you can see here:

Surprisingly, he was commissioned to create avant-garde advertisements for the British General Post Office and later war-time films for the Crown Film Unit. In the 1940s, he moved to New York, where he spent the rest of his career working with film and animation, but also branching out into sculpture.

Lye called these pieces “tangible motion sculptures” — motion made tangible.3 Think metal rods that twist and bend, or springs that bounce back and forth, or undulating sheets of aluminum. He dreamt of creating these sculptures on a colossal scale, but was limited by available funding.

“My work I think is going to be pretty good for the 21st century. Why the 21st? It’s simply that there won’t be the means until then, I don’t think there’ll be the means to have what I want, which is enlarged versions of my work.” - Len Lye4

Since his death, the Lye Foundation in New Zealand has continued working to realize his unfinished large-scale work, such as “Water Whirler,” finally built in 2006 in Wellington.

Dries van Noten x Len Lye collaboration

Dries van Noten started planning his Spring 2021 collection during the early days of the pandemic. “I was seeking inspiration from a beauty devoid of nostalgia, an energetic and optimistic beauty. We looked at a lot of works, lights, colours, and movement,” he told A Magazine Curated By. He came across Len Lye’s work online, not knowing who the artist was, but appreciating the mood of his work.

First I thought it was from the late Sixties, completely psychedelic. But then I heard the music. Why would they do a film like this to the sound of Josephine Baker? I then discovered that it was in fact from the Thirties, which is quite amazing, because it’s so forward-thinking, it’s so direct, it’s so incredible. And then we started to try to find more information about him – he was also a friend of the artist Man Ray.5

Van Noten’s studio reached out the the Len Lye Foundation in New Zealand to learn more. Lye had died in 1980, but the foundation was open to collaborating. Van Noten jumped into their archives and strove to create a collection that embodied Lye’s artistic vision.

It would be a little sad just to say, ‘Okay, this image is nice, let’s replicate it on fabric.’ It really was about the whole idea of Len’s mind, the craft of how he created prints directly on the celluloid that scratching, stencilling and painting on the film for me was so important.

[…] We were allowed also to make different colour combinations but still respecting his way of putting colours together and the overall atmosphere. The Foundation provided us with plenty of support, information and flexibility, which was a true collaboration.”6

There was a real emphasis on movement, as a core focus of Lye’s artistic practice, across media. And really, the flow of fabric feels like a natural extension of his work with light, film, and kinetic sculpture.

Last but not least, the clothes

This was Dries van Noten’s first co-ed collection: he’d been doing menswear since 1986 and womenswear since 1993, but the two had always been conceptually separate until this Spring 2021 collection, where both bore the mark of Lye’s art. “Normally I have a different approach for men and women,” van Noten is quoted saying in Forbes. “The optimistic message we have in the collection was important for me to have for the men and for the women.”

The show was critically well received when it debuted in September 2020, described as a breath of fresh air amid the pandemic. The Cut described it as “a perfect study in what you hope a designer can learn from this excruciating year. It is lean, agile, witty, and more youthful than any he has done in years.”

Although the prints are big, bold, and colorful, the clothes were somewhat simpler than van Noten’s preceding collections, which had been adorned with fur, feathers, and sequins. “We tried to capture the essence of the work of Len Lye in the collection,” said van Noten. “We worked a lot with cotton and organza, and thought about how we can make it move, and how we can make it crisp, stiff, or soft.”7

The way that Lye’s work is printed on the fabrics gives the impression that we’re looking at a projection — light and shadows cast on to the clothing, not merely striped fabric. And Hypebeast notes that even the garment design and construction furthers the illusion of motion: “constructed balloon sleeves frequently appear, while exaggerated wide-scooped necklines, high-waisted pants, caftans, and belted pieces continue to play with construction, proportions, and movement.”

I’ve created my own terminology for some of the prints, which is by no means official but allows me to group together the different types of patterns: there are stripes that look like bold brush strokes of light, compared to stricter geometric stripes that seem to glow; parallel squiggles of color, which remind me of the patterns Lye created using a comb; bright boxes arranged in grids that seem to jump off the fabric; a recurring motif of palm trees, from a Lye photo; what I’m calling “lozenges,” or repeating oblong shapes; photographic portraits; and words projected in light, among others. It’s an imperfect taxonomy, but I’ll use these terms below for my resale finds…

The print was used for a flowy maxi dress, a ruffled skirt, an off-shoulder blouse, pair of pants, a smoking jacket, and even a pair of boots. The same collection also included a slim-cut black suit that was embroidered with tiny white bulls, as a complementary look.

I’ll be honest, I’d seen this print around and hadn’t given it much thought, until I zoomed in on the Pre-Fall 2016 collection for my article about Tibi’s labels, which required me to get very familiar with these pieces while cross-referencing runway pictures with resale listings. It was only then that I realized how cool this print was: Are those little matadors and bulls dancing among the floral motifs? And also a lynx? Now I’m charmed!

Let me set the scene for you: It’s 2016, already several years after Tibi had moved away from their reputation as The Print Brand. If you read my article about the evolution of Tibi’s labels, you may recall that Pre-Fall 2016 was the season that the current branding was introduced. So we’re already in the realm of Creative Pragmatism, even if Dione and Amy hadn’t coined that phrase yet…

All that to say, this wasn’t the era of Tibi prints galore, so when the Tibi design team did use a print, we can assume it was a thoughtful style decision.

In this case, it seems like the ruffle came first, and then the print by association. Here’s a quote from Amy in the WWD review of the collection:

Amy Smilovic and her team had a collective craving for ruffles for pre-fall even though “none of us are ruffle people,” Smilovic said. “When we like something outside of our comfort zone, it’s interesting to play with it and get it to a place where we all want to wear it.”

Deconstructed and applied asymmetrically to the hems of dresses or peplum blouses, subtle ruffled accents looked cool, never precious. The frills drew a Spanish association, as Smilovic developed a colorful floral print featuring bullfighters, showing it on black pajama-style separates, a sheer chiffon dress and ankle boots.

Similarly, Vogue described these looks as “quirky, not girly, ruffles.”

While researching this print, I found one fun piece of 2016 pop culture history: apparently Hilary Duff wore this top on an episode of “Younger,” the mid-2010s TV Land show, and now that’s what comes up whenever I try googling it. Similarly, I find it funny how many Poshmark listings will boast that Tibi pieces were worn on “Gossip Girl” or “Gilmore Girls,” like that’s the look I’m going for. 😂

Another thing I like about this 2016 print is that it seems to nod back to some of Tibi’s even earlier location-based prints, what I’ll call “tourism prints.” You can see three such examples below, prints inspired by Hong Kong, Bermuda, and Canada.

I think there were more of these tourism prints, but these were all I could find to show you. Fun story: I offered to buy the Canada dress for my friend who recently became a Canadian citizen, but she’s not a Tibi fan so didn’t appreciate the very deep-cut reference… she just thought it was a kinda ugly orange dress with an overly patriotic print. Oh well, it’s sold now so I guess somebody else must’ve liked it!

The “Seville” print has been my main focus today, but I want to also touch upon the thematically related suit set that came from the same collection. A patterns of tiny white bulls are embroidered across the black blazer and slim trousers. (At first, I thought they were cats.) You can see a close-up here:

(Side note: seeing the older black label there is making me lose my mind. I thought I already put this timeline question to rest! Why is that black label still there in Pre-Fall 2016? Everything else I’ve seen from that collection has the current white minimalist label! Aargh!! 🫠)

Anyway, if you share my fascination with this playful print, there are plenty of the tops and skirts available for resale. Enough so that I feel comfortable assigning a market price for each: the top generally costs around $40, and the skirt goes for $50-60. Unfortunately, I have not been able to track down the “Seville” pants, smoking jacket, or dress. If you can find them, please let everyone know in the comments!

Girl power aside, I adore Grace Wales Bonner. Since she launched her eponymous label in 2014, she has built a reputation for combining craft with heritage in what some call “cerebral” design. She pulls influences from the Black diaspora and contextualizes her shows with reading lists that feature the likes of James Baldwin and Ralph Ellison. Her shows are always thoroughly researched, which obviously appeals to a nerd like me.

We’ll have to wait until 2027 to see Wales Bonner’s first collection for Hermès, but in the meanwhile, here’s a couple of my favorite looks she’s done. And then stick around for some resale bargains at the end!

Lewis Hamilton’s Met Gala look

I don’t know if I’ve shared this part of me on Substack yet, but those who follow me on IG know that in addition to being a Tibi Fan, I am also an F1 fan — that is, Formula 1 racing. Lewis Hamilton is a British driver with seven world championships under his belt and also the best dressed on the paddock. For years, he was pretty much the only driver who gave a hoot about fashion, although that’s changing now with a younger generation of drivers and their influencer girlfriends.

(I just wrote and deleted three more paragraphs about Hamilton’s fashion bona fides, but I digress; instead, here’s a good summary from Vogue.)

Earlier this year, Hamilton partnered up with Wales Bonner for a very special look to wear to The Met Gala: an ivory suit with cropped tuxedo tailcoat, covered in symbolic details like cowrie shells and mother-of-pearl buttons.

The caption to Hamilton’s post:

From the moment I heard the theme of this year’s Met Gala, I knew I wanted to work with Grace @walesbonner. This look has taken months of research and development. Every detail has been deeply considered—there’s a lot of emotion and meaning woven into this. This is more than a suit, this is ancestral history. Stylish, spiritual, and sharp. Thank you, Grace.

I could go on and on about this look — the craftsmanship! the historical research! — but I’ll leave you with what’s in Vogue and on Wales Bonner’s website.

And she also designed looks for TKA Twigs, Jeff Goldblum, and Omar Apollo, among other attendees at the gala.

“Superfine” exhibit at The Met

I love the Met, so you’ll excuse me for choosing this as my next example. “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” is this year’s blockbuster fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Wales Bonner was literally the poster child for this show. That’s her gorgeous design on the cover of the accompanying exhibition catalog.

Wales Bonner’s work is a perfect embodiment of Black Dandyism. As her website states: “Since its inception, Wales Bonner has brought together the traditions of European fashion with the style and soulfulness of Afro-Atlantic expression.” In a Vogue interview, she shared, “The show feels like a celebration of everything that is important to me: elegance, refinement, the idea of embodied clothing and its power to transform.”

I know I just went on a whole rant last week about how much I hate designer collabs, and it’s true that I was annoyed today by all the Wales Bonner x Adidas stuff mixed in with her own label, but I gotta admit, this collaboration has been pretty cool. They’ve released a few collections together since 2020, many of which sold out right away. I know these silver sneakers took Instagram by storm in 2023 — and yeah, I get it. I wouldn’t mind a pair myself, if the Sambas actually fit my wide foot…

So here are a few honorable mentions from that collab:

I’m being cranky, I know, but bear with me. I love the idea of democratizing good design and making it affordable for everyone. Heck, I once wrote a paper in high school about Russian Constructivism and their revolutionary vision of injecting art into the daily lives of factory workers through the creation of beautiful uniforms and interior design. How cool is that? (Learn more here and here.)

And don’t get me wrong, I love a bargain! But what I don’t love is sweatshops cranking out subpar products that just end up in landfills. Or when resale platforms are filled with mislabeled crap that makes it harder to find the real treasures. I get so annoyed when I see a Target sweater misidentified as real Rachel Comey on The Real Real, and priced nearly twice what it cost new.

In any a partnership, the goal is for both collaborators to bring their own strengths to the table, right? And in this case, the designer brings their aesthetic and style sensibility, but what does the fast fashion label bring to the table? Sweatshops. Mass production. Lower quality.

The result of this compromise is watered down style and poorly-made clothing. It might look cooler than H&M, GAP, Uniqlo, or Target’s normal fare, but the quality is not what you’d expect of the designer’s home label. Just think about it, if Jil Sander could produce high-quality tailored slacks for under $100, don’t you think she would be doing that all the time? Craftsmanship ain’t cheap!

But I don’t want to be a Negative Nancy and rain on your parade without offering a solution, so here’s my pivot:

1. Be an educated thrifter. As a secondhand shopper, I like to be aware of the collabs that involve my favorite designers, so I can cultivate a discerning eye to recognize these pieces in the wild and distinguish them from their better-quality step-siblings. I’m not above buying some of these pieces secondhand (we want to be diverting as many clothes from the landfill as possible!), but I do want to know what I’m buying and make an informed decision about what I’m willing to pay.

2. Buy secondhand designer for even less. Let’s say you love Sandy Liang, but her clothes are usually out of your price range. Rather than rushing to buy the new Sandy Liang x GAP collab, why not look for secondhand pieces instead? That way you’ll get the true designer quality and possibly pay even less than what the collab pieces cost!

So in this article, I’m going to talk through a few different collaborations and share some secondhand alternatives for each, at comparable prices.

Jil Sanders x Uniqlo

Jil Sander partnered with the Japanese superstore to launch J+ in 2009. (Not to be confused with Jil Sanders’ own in-house diffusion brand, Jil Sander Navy.) They’ve put out several collections together since then, and it’s unclear to me if that collab is still ongoing?

In 2020, when the collaboration was revived after nearly a decade-long hiatus, Jil Sander said this to The Cut:

I wanted to react to disposable fashion. And Uniqlo’s buying power, logistics, and distribution network make it possible to design high-quality clothes with a contemporary message at democratic prices. The pandemic added urgency to the project. Even great clothes, I feel, can encourage us all to get ready for a new beginning. To me, +J is like a little present that I can contribute.

Hmm, I beg to differ with that “high-quality” claim. I supposed these J+ pieces are better made than the extreme fast fashion of Shein, but you’re still not getting anything too great. These collections offer a lot of shirts, knits, suiting, and outerwear, but there are so many beautiful Jil Sander wool and cashmere blazers out there for resale, so why would you pay more for the poly blend version from Uniqlo?

This is the label you’re looking out for, if like me you’d rather avoid the Uniqlo collab:

Rachel Comey x Target

When this Rachel Comey x Target collab dropped in 2021, it was hyped up months in advance by everyone from Vogue to Town & Country. Naïve young fashionista that I was, I even set an alarm to make sure I got what I wanted: the herringbone tweed suit set. But when it arrived in the mail, I was disappointed by the quality of the fabric and the tailoring. The material was an itchy linen blend, and the pleat allowance was too meager for the trousers to drape properly. That’s when I learned, you get what you pay for — at least as far as these collabs go. (Shopping resale gets you much more bang for your buck!)

Even so, there are two pieces from this collection that I actually like (the marble print turtleneck and the floral quilted jacket) and wouldn’t mind buying… if I find them secondhand for under $15-20. But after feeling the fabric quality in person, I wouldn’t pay more than that.

This is the label you’re looking out for:

The resale sites are overflowing with these pieces, and they aren’t always labeled clearly as “Rachel Comey x Target,” which can be a nightmare for secondhand shoppers like myself. It’s only because I remember that collab so clearly that I can distinguish between what’s true RC and the cheaper Target stuff: the collection featured some memorable prints (tiger stripe, floral, marbled tie-dye), denim jumpsuits, pleather, and cable knits.

Cute, but we can do better!

Nili Lotan x Target

Target’s Nili Lotan collab came out the same season as Rachel Comey’s, so even though I didn’t follow it as closely, the pieces still seeped into my consciousness, and I’ve gotten pretty good at spotting the telltale signs: leopard print polyester blouse, Western-style denim shirt, camo skinny jeans, brown paisley slip dress, pinstripe trousers, and army green jumpsuit, to name a few.

This is the label to beware of:

If you’re shopping for Marni on the online resale platforms, I suggest you familiarize yourself with these collab collections, so you can try to avoid buying them by mistake. They often are not labeled clearly! Beware of neon striped knits and plaid prints on polyester. The original label is much nicer quality.

Sandy Liang x GAP (and x Target and x Vans)

Everyone and their sister has been writing about the Sandy Liang x GAP collab that launched last week, so I won’t spill too much digital ink on this one. Suffice to say, there’s some cute stuff, but I won’t be buying it. Previously, Liang collaborated with Target in Fall 2021, the same season as the Rachel Comey and Nili Lotan collabs.1 She also released a collection with Vans in 2022.

These are the labels you’re looking to avoid:

Poshmark and eBay are overflowing with pieces from the Target collection, including: cottage-core bib collars, cow print fuzzy hoodie, floral teddy jacket, tan cargo pants, and leopard fleece. The Vans collab featured a lot of sneakers and tie-dye pieces.

JW Anderson x Uniqlo (and x Topshop)

Doesn’t this man have enough collections to design? On top of his duties for Dior and his own eponymous label, JW Anderson also churns out two collections a year for Uniqlo.

The Uniqlo collab has been going since 2017 and is known for its modern takes on the staples of British style — think plaids, chunky knits, rugby stripes, Oxford shirts, etc. There was also a Topshop collab in 2012 and 2013, which featured a lot of paisley and playful prints.

Here are the labels to beware of:

When the Uniqlo partnership first launched in 2017, Anderson told The Guardian:

I believe luxury does not exist…. I believe that we have a cultural responsibility in terms of our stores, in terms of how we communicate, because ultimately we’ve got to help each other to try to ‘democratise’ fashion in such a way that it can be accessible on any level… And, of course, I can’t afford a Rembrandt, but I can still come to the Tate or Hepworth, and I can still enjoy it.

Okay… I like the sentiment, but color me skeptical.

A lot of people love this collab, and there has been a lot of hype about the latest drop. I happened to be in store earlier this week (restocking on on socks, and I love Uniqlo’s colorful selection) and was disappointed by the hand feel of the JW Anderson items I saw.

If I’m getting a classic Oxford button-up, why would I want that to be 40% rayon? With so much vintage Brooks Brothers shirting on eBay, nobody should accept less than pure cotton! I know, I know, Brooks Brothers are too classic and lack Jonathan’s signature style, the playful design quirks that we love him for. So in that case, let’s go straight to the source and find some secondhand pieces from the JW Anderson label.

Marimekko x [fill in the blank]

I don’t think anyone has done as many collabs as Marimekko! And it makes sense: the brand is known for their bold prints, which translate pretty well to any kind of product. Here are just a few that I’m aware of:

• Marimekko x Uniqlo (multiple seasons)

• Marimekko x Adidas

• Marimekko x Target

• Marimekko x Banana Republic

• Marimekko x Crocs

• Marimekko x Samsung?!

Because of all these collabs over the years, it is a real uphill battle trying to find original Marimekko pieces on resale. Obviously, I’m not confusing that Crocs collab with anything from the Helsinki workshop, but a lot of the others can get tricky! At least with the Adidas collection I can usually recognize the sporty logo from a distance. The Uniqlo, Target, and Banana Republic collabs can be much harder, especially since popular prints (like the Unikko floral) are used across multiple collections.

I adore vintage Marimekko and have been lucky to inherit/steal two 1960s dresses from my mom (the O.G. thriftanista). I would love to collect more of these pieces, but I’ve nearly given up at this point because of all the fast fashion collabs that have tainted the resale ecosystem.

That said, I am heartened to see that Marimekko runs their own secondhand and vintage marketplace, Marimekko Pre-loved. How great to see a designer prioritizing sustainability. For now, it’s only available in Finland, but here’s hoping they expand the initiative!

Closing thoughts

This is an industrywide problem, and I’m only singling these specific collabs out as some examples that I am personally invested in; that is, brands that I shop for secondhand and get annoyed when too much fast fashion gunks up my searches.

I know I’m being a snob here about quality, but the point I’m trying to get across is that your money is better spent on secondhand designer clothing that will cost less than these viral collabs and last you much longer.

I will say this, though: after digging around for these resale alts to offer you, I’m realizing that the collabs tend to be more size inclusive than a lot of designer clothing (and by association, the secondhand designer market). And that’s nothing to sniff at! I’m very annoyed by the limited size range for some of the pieces I shared today, and I apologize for that.

• Plaid: a generic term used mostly in North American to describe colorful patterns of criss-crossed stripes that form a grid of varying sizes and colors.

• Tartan: Scottish plaids that are historically identified with a specific family or clan.

There is a long and fascinating history behind these fabrics, but what I like about Tibi’s take on the tradition is how they modernize their plaids with unexpected color combinations that feel fresh and fun.

“Recycled check” (2020)

This one stumped me for a long time, and when I finally figured out the name, what a let down. It feels like Amy and the gang really phoned it in with this name: “recycled” refers to the fabric, which is 100% recycled polyester. Obviously, that doesn’t describe the plaid itself, but that was the only descriptor given to these pieces. It was from the Resort 2020 collection, and I have the look book to prove it!

This is such a fun plaid, with bright blue and green running through the pattern. Tibi produced a miniskirt, a cropped shirt, a smocked midi skirt, a trench coat, and an oversized men’s shirt.1 I love this pattern, even though the polyester fabrication gives me pause. I searched around online and found these secondhand options for you:

• Miniskirt:

  • size 0 for $80 on Depop

  • size 0 for $155 on Vestiaire — seller is located in Germany2

  • size 4 for $80 on TRR

  • size 4 for €120 on Depop — also in Germany

Spencer (2020)

This plaid is from the same Resort 2020 collection, a good season for plaids it seems. Spencer combines black, olive, and deep blue with a shockingly bright sky blue, and the fabric is 67% polyester and 33% cotton. They used this pattern for a blazer, shorts, shacket, and long coat (called the “Spencer Plaid Cocoon Shape Maxi Coat”), which you can see styled here in the original look book:

You can see Dione wearing in the Spencer maxi coat in this Style Class video at the 40-minute mark, where she draws attention to the beautiful coloration.

Tristan (2020)

This plaid was used first in the Spring 2020 collection and then reappeared in the 2022 “Cut-ups,” when Tibi reused old fabric for new designs. Tristan’s black and tan pattern almost reminds me of a classic Burberry plaid, but with a green line instead of red. This material has the same fabric composition as the Gabe plaid, which, like I said, is basically tropical wool.

You can see how Amy styles the Tristan Stella pants in this video at approximately 32:50 and again at 42:00, and here she is in the full suit. And in this Style Class at 6:30, you can see Patrick and Sarah styling the Cut-Ups blazer, which a slimmer Marlon-type cut.

Gabe (2020)

This plaid was featured in both Pre-Fall 2020 and Fall 2020. I love the subtle colors at play here: navy, maroon, and caramel thread their way through the more muted grey and white. The material is basically the same as Tibi’s tropical wool (54% polyester vs 53%) and was used for the Gabe Menswear Suiting Blazer, Pleated Balloon Pant, and Suiting Pull On Shorts. You can see a pair of wide leg cargo pants in the photos from Fall 2020, but I’m not sure those ever went into production, because I’ve never seen them for resale.

Here’s a fun bit of Tibi history: they did a photoshoot with Gabrielle Union in the full suit, pictured here. Here you can see the balloon pants and jacket in a Style Class from 2020, at approximately the 27-minute mark, and here is the lovely Dione modeling the suit in different outfits to demonstrate just how versatile a set it is! And lastly, here’s Amy wearing the full suit.

The Gabe plaid is another favorite of mine, despite some fit issues I’ve experienced with the actual clothing items. I was lucky enough to pick up this full suit at a clothing swap (thank you, Ivy!) but unlucky enough to gain weight, so it doesn’t fit me anymore. I passed the balloon pants on to another Tibi Fan and am still trying to sell the jacket, in hopes that I can use the proceeds rebuy in a larger size. Reynolds (2020)

As far as I can tell, the Reynolds plaid was not featured on the runway, but I believe it was from Fall 2020. Tibi made two shirts with this 100% cotton fabric: the Reynolds Plaid Sleeveless Shoulderpad Shirt and the Reynolds Plaid Charlie Men’s Slim Shirt. The shirts look blue on the models, but when you zoom in or look in person, the dominant color is actually olive!

You can see how it’s styled in this video at roughly the 13-minute mark, and Sarah rocks the sleeveless shirt in this Style Class at 29:45.

I’ve had my eye on both shirts for a while because I love the pattern, but I’m worried neither shirt would fit me properly, because the Charlie shirt is a slimmer cut that tugs across my hips, and the super cool asymmetric design of the sleeveless shirt might hit weird on my shorter torso. But those are just quirks of my own body, and I think the rest of you should nab these shirts if you can!

Sana (2021)

I think this plaid is from Resort 2021. It’s one of my favorites (how many times will I say that in this article?) but here’s the thing about the Sana check: the colors just don’t photograph well! There’s a baby blue and pale purple running through the check, which isn’t visible until you look closely in person. Possibly because it’s such a high contrast pattern, all the subtler colors tend to get washed out in pictures?

This beautiful pattern was used in a sleeveless short dress, a sleeved midi dress, a short “bloomer” romper, a sleeveless jumpsuit, a cropped blouse, and ruched shorts. If you want to see these pieces in action, check out these videos:

I have a long relationship with this plaid. Three or four years ago, I bought the Sana Check Colorblock Dress from ThredUp and had the maddening experience of discovering that both (a) the plaid was even better in person than I’d realized, and (b) the asymmetric dropped waist cut of the dress did not work for my figure. I was sorry to return the dress, and ever since, I’ve been hunting for another way to bring this plaid into my life! It’s a synthetic blend (69% polyester, 30% viscose, and 1% elastane), which I don’t love, but at least it’s recycled.

I think the sleeveless dress used to be on Rent the Runway, so they pop up a lot on resale sites. Here are some options for you:

Nova (2021)

This plaid was part of Tibi’s Spring 2021 collection and was used for a Liam jacket, Stella pants, and pleated shorts.

Taken as a whole, this pattern looks pink and tan, but you can see it’s actually composed of yellow and red stripes running through a black and white check. I thought this was called “nova” because of the salmon-color pink hue, but now I’m not so sure… The fabric content is 53% polyester, 44% virgin wool, and 3% elastane, which is close to what they use for Tibi’s tropical wool.

Heston (2021)

I believe the Heston plaid came out in Fall 2021, but I cannot find a lot of info about this one. I love the combination of rich chocolate brown and vibrant royal blue. The coat seems a little longer than the Liam. Rose, The Creative Classicist on Instagram, has this coat and wears it beautifully:

Sterling (2021)

This plaid debuted in the Fall 2021 collection. This came in a black-and-white version too, but that’s boring so let’s focus on the green one instead!

I could’ve sworn there was pink in there, but upon closer inspection, it’s just yellow, green, and blue. I had to use the color picker tool to confirm! One thing I’m realizing from analyzing these plaids is how the juxtaposition of colors can trick the eye into seeing another color that isn’t really present. (I’m sure a neuroscientist or art teacher would have something cool say about that… If you’re either, please explain in the comments!)

Both colors are fabricated in a rougher tweed material, with a higher wool content (62% wool, 38% colyamide) compared to Tibi’s usual tropical wool (only 43%). I haven’t felt this one myself, and I wonder if it might be itchy?

This material was used for the Sterling Plaid Gauze Mockneck Dress, and I think there may have been a top and skirt, too. Here’s what I was able to find on resale:

Costello (2021)

This plaid debuted in Fall 2021 as a jacket, shorts, and skort. The fabric is 100% polyester. I love how this walks the line between traditional prep and punk aesthetics. The jacket has studded details along the shoulders, adding to that edgy vibe. You can see the Costello blazer and culottes in this episode of Style Class at 11:05 and again at 26:30.

The jacket comes up for sale from time to time, I think because it was featured on Rent the Runway, so there are plenty still in circulation, but what I really have my eyes on is the skort. RTR sells off their older stock, so you can still buy the jacket from them in sizes XS and S for $170. It’s worth checking back regularly, because I feel like they fluctuate their prices a lot based on inventory. I could swear I saw this for under $100 at some point…

Grandfather Frank (2021)

It seems like 2021 was a good year for plaids! The Grandfather Plaid Frank Coat was part of the Fall 2021 collection. If I’m parsing that name correctly, I think the pattern is called “Grandfather plaid,” and “Frank” refers to the cut of this coat. The plaid features a beautiful combination of blue, orange, and tan, and the material is 72% wool and 28% polyamide, so it’s woolier than most Tibi coats. This one feels like if the Lucas and Hopper plaids had a baby.

I’m most familiar with the long coat, but they also released a Liam-style blazer and a set of detached coat sleeves in this material. You can see Amy wearing the Liam in this episode of Style Class, and in this video Dione will convince you that the sleeve thing is a must (see 12:30). Here Amy explains all the fun design details of the longer coat, at approximately 41:45.

This is a fan favorite and rarely comes up for resale, but I did find one:

Houndstooth (2022)

Tibi has done more than one houndstooth over the years, but here I’m talking specifically about the pattern from Resort 2022. It’s a beautifully deceptive print, until you look closely to see what colors are actually being used. It looks blue-ish green on the models, but not so! The fabric is called “Menswear Tailored Jersey,” and it’s composed of 49% polyamide, 48% cotton, and 3% elastane. I’m kind of surprised there’s no wool in there at all and curious what the hand feel is like.

They used this material for a Liam blazer and a pencil skirt. The original webpage for the Liam is still live, so you can check out all the product details here. This was featured in a few episodes of Tibi Style Class: here you can see Rosie Lai in the full suit, and the Amy discusses the look in this video at 5:35.

Hopper (2023)

As far as I can tell, this pattern has only been used in a single product from Tibi: the Hopper Plaid Dennis Blazer from Fall 2023. Which leads to some confusion: is the fabric “Hopper plaid” and the cut of the jacket is called the “Dennis blazer,” or the other way around? I suspect the product name is clearly a nod to the late great actor, Dennis Hopper, but that doesn’t really clarify things, does it?

Regardless, this is a fan favorite, and I understand why. The fabric is a luxurious blend of 95% virgin wool and 5% cashmere. At first glance, it looks like a classic grandfatherly plaid, but you’ve got to love those subtle stripes of baby blue and cherry red running through the rich caramel brown. Scrumptious!

This doesn’t come up for resale too often, and I wasn’t able to find anything in time for publishing… If anything comes up, I’ll share it in my subscriber chat, where I post daily resale bargains.

Even with two posts, there still are plenty more plaid and check patterns that I haven’t touched on (e.g., Marvel, Camille, Edmund, and Dylan, just to name a few) but that should be enough to keep you busy for a while. 😘

Before we jump into it, let’s define some terms:

• Plaid: in the traditional Scottish context, plaid was a rectangular piece of wool that could be used as a scarf, shawl, or blanket, but nowadays, plaid is a more generic term used in North American to describe any “colored criss-cross fabrics, including but not only tartans… they often feature stripes or checks in multiple colors, and may or may not be associated with a particular family or clan.”1

  • Common types include:

    • Glen plaid (a.k.a. Prince of Wales check): a black-and-white pattern of two dark and two light stripes alternating with four dark and four light stripes, creating a crossing pattern of irregular checks.

    • Madras: bright, vibrant plaids made in lightweight cotton, originally from Chennai, India.

• Tartan: “a patterned cloth consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors, typically associated with Scottish culture and heritage.”2 So basically, a tartan is a plaid pattern that’s identified with a specific clan or community.

• Check: a woven pattern using only two colors, with the same stripe pattern in the warp and the weft (meaning vertical and horizontal fibers) creating a repeating square pattern.

  • Common types include: Gingham, buffalo check, windowpane, and Houndstooth.

• Tweed: this term is tangentially related and refers to a type of wool fabric, rather than a specific pattern. The wool fibers are dyed before being spun into yarn (rather than dyeing the whole thing at the end), which gives it a heterogeneous coloring, so you can see specks of different colors within the pattern.

  • Herringbone: a V-shaped, zigzag pattern that resembles a fish skeleton.

Thanks to Clan, Design Pool, Mullen & Mullen, J&L Tweed, Vintage Fashion Guild, and Wikipedia for helping me piece together that explainer. I’m guilty of using these terms somewhat interchangeably, but now I know better! Or at least, slightly better? To be honest, my heading is spinning, but let’s not allow that to derail our conversation any further, and instead forge ahead with our Tibi talk!

So anyway, I had hoped that Tibi’s pattern names might be connected to traditional Scottish tartans, since I recognize some of these family names (Spencer, Elliot, Reynolds, etc.) but alas, there seems to be no connection — even when the Tibi plaid shares the same name as a clan tartan.

So basically, the designers at Tibi just name their plaids whatever they feel like, willy-nilly, which means I had to do a bit more digging into the archives to figure out what each of these patterns is called. You know, if they were named after their Scottish counterparts, I could’ve just called my mom, who can recognize a lot of these tartans just off the top of her head! After researching this article, I think I’m now nearly as fluent in Tibi’s plaids.

Cooper

The Cooper plaid came in two different color ways: grey-blue and yellow-blue. I can’t figure out what year this was, but based on the styling of the models, I would guess sometime 2015-2018? (If you remember the year, please let me know in the comments!)

Based on my research into plaid terminology, I think this could be referred to as a Glen plaid. The fabric is 85% wool and 15% silk, which is an uncommon blend from Tibi lately; there’s usually a synthetic mixed in there, rather than two natural fibers. That might prove a useful diagnostic for identifying “Cooper” in the wild.

Tibi used this material to produce jackets with side cut-outs, skirt, and a few different pairs of pants. The most common has a jogger-style leg and elastic cuff with silver snaps, but I think they made a straight leg version, too. There’s also a pair of wider-leg pants that have an attached sash going over one shoulder. I’m not sure if all these designs came out the same year, or if Tibi revisited this fabric across multiple seasons.

Atticus Houndstooth (2017)

This was a last minute addition to my list, because I didn’t realize how cool the pattern is until I took a closer look… The houndstooth looks grey from afar, but is actually composed of brown and blues. The fabric is 52% polyester, 21% viscose, 20% wool, 6% polyurethane, and 1 % elastane, and it was part of the Pre-Fall 2017 collection.

I was able to dig up a few options for you on resale:

Lucas (2018)

This plaid has a lovely navy and orange pattern that would be perfect for any Mets or Broncos fans. I believe it’s the Fall 2018 collection, even though it wasn’t shown on the runway, because I spotted the telltale graffiti on the lining of this blazer. The fabric is composed of 54% polyester, 44% virgin wool, and 2% elastane, which is very similar to Tibi’s tropical wool. It came in a miniskirt, blazer, pants, an oversized jacket, and some kind of peacoat minidress thing?

Untitled purple plaid (2018)

This plaid was featured in Tibi’s Fall 2018 collection and is richly ornamented with blue, purple, and caramel. The fabric composition is 78% polyester and 22% virgin wool. This is my favorite of all Tibi plaids, and yet I have no idea what it’s called! Do you?? If so, please let me know in the comments, and I’ll update the post!

They made a blazer, long coat, skirt, and pants in this pattern. It doesn’t come up very often, but every single time it does, I am tempted to buy regardless of size. (I still regret passing up the blazer when I spotted it at Consignment Brooklyn last year, even if it too small.)

This plaid is not to be confused with the very similar Walden plaid that came out the following year, in the Pre-Fall 2019 collection:

See how lame Walden is by comparison? None of the joie de vivre I love about the other one. Walden came in a jumpsuit, dress, and maybe skirt, and every time I see one of those pieces for sale, my hopes are raised then dashed yet again. Maybe I wouldn’t mind Walden so much if it weren’t such a tease in that way.

I could only find one piece of my favorite mystery plaid to share with you today:

Hani (2019)

This is a very distinct orange and green plaid, composed of 54% polyester and 46% cotton. Tibi used this material for a skirt, dress, pants, blazer with drawstring waist, oversized tuxedo jacket, and a reversible trench coat in their Resort 2019 collection. Here are a couple easter eggs for you: the skirt (and some kind of top I don’t recognize) featured on the cover of Spain’s Muherhoy magazine in December 2018, and the blazer in Elle from February 2019.

Elliot (2019)

Tibi released a dress, skirt, and top in the Elliot plaid in 2019. This pattern looks black and white in many pictures, but it’s actually a pale mint. In fact, this is a common complaint among Rent the Runway reviewers, who were surprised to receive a more colorful dress than they expected.

The fabric is 95% viscose and 5% polyamide, which is described as a thin, breathable material. Since the skirt (and top?) used to be on RTR, there are still plenty circulating on the secondhand market. Here are a few resale options:

James (2019)

Here’s where things get complicated: Tibi released the James check in two different color ways, which doesn’t make any sense to me… Is “James” a pattern or style or a state of mind? Both versions have the same fabric composition (69% polyester, 29% wool, and 2% elastane) and use the same pattern of lines, just executed in different colors, but why couldn’t they change up the names to make my life easier?

Personally, I prefer the grey version because of the subtle lavender line running through the check. It can be hard one to identify from runway photos, since that identifying purple isn’t visible from a distance.

You can see the brown version in the Pre-Fall 2019 collection, and I’m guessing that both came out around the same time. If you look closely, you can see a silver ant embellishment featured on the lapel of the brown jacket and the cuff of the grey one, which harkens to that collection’s popular ant print! 🐜

Tibi used this fabric to produce a long blazer, a cropped blazer, the slimmer Sebastian pants, and a pair of pull-on pants. Since this pattern pre-dates the beginning of Tibi’s Style Classes on Instagram Live,4 the James check pieces only show up in the videos when Amy and friends dive into the archive/warehouse to spotlight older pieces available on clearance. For example, you can see Hayes wearing the full suit in brown in this St. Simons live video, “Special Archive Edition” from 2021.

Zion (2019)

I’m not sure, but I think this was from the Spring 2019 collection, based on the boots worn by the model in this pic. I don’t think the pattern was used in any additional products besides the Zion Plaid Lab Coat, pictured above. It’s a cotton-viscose blend (58% cotton, 40% viscose, 2% elastane), with stripes of blue, green, and brick-pink colors against a light tan background.

I don’t see this one come up very often for resale, but here’s what is currently available:

Kingston

This is a fun black, yellow, and red plaid that I believe was only used for this one shirt, which had a neck tie and a zipper down the back. (Is this at risk of violated Amy’s “rule of three”?) It’s 100% cotton, and a little thicker than you might expect. I’m having trouble dating this pattern, but my best guess is 2019. Please let me know if the comments if you have any intel!

I used to have this shirt, bought on resale as one of my first ever Tibi purchases, and I remember being so surprised when I opened the package: I had thought it was going to be a plaid of blues and greens, based on poor quality images, but here I was with a yellow and red shirt instead! I struggled with this at first, but came round to the pattern when fellow Tibi Fan, Nicole, told me to think of it as punk rock and Vivienne Westwood-inspired, rather than Bob from accounting on casual Friday, which was my first association. Even still, I struggled to style this shirt because of the funky zipper in the back, and eventually I resold mine. But I love how I’ve seen other Tibi fans style theirs, like Lauren a.k.a. @todayshegotdressed on Instagram:

A few years ago, the resale market was saturated with this shirt. When I decided to part with mine last year, I could hardly give it away; I think I ended up selling for $15. But now the laws of supply and demand are doing their thing, and resellers are asking an arm and a leg for this shirt. While I was searching for these options for you, I saw some listed for well over $100! I am not including those out of principle… and spite, to be honest.

The fashion industry capitalizes on our desire for novelty, pushing us to buy buy buy every new trend, but nothing comes out of nothing; in fact, many of these exciting new ideas build upon earlier designs. Like most labels, Tibi continuously revisits their archive and updates perennial favorites. Who doesn’t love a pocket?

I spotted a familiar silhouette in the upcoming resort collection: the Boiled Wool Mini Skirt from Fall 2022 featured the same style of detachable zip pocket!

You know I have a strong preference for buying secondhand, but I would be remiss not to mention that this skirt is still available on deep sale directly from Tibi, in sizes 00, 2, 6, 8, 10, 12 in navy for $99 and size 00, 0 2, 4, 6, 7, 12 in ivory for $99.

Also, sizes 2, 4, 6, and 10 are available for sale on Rent the Runway for $110, and here’s a size 0 for $75 on TRR.

Prints

Tibi has a new print coming in Spring 2026, and although I haven’t been able to get a closer look at the pattern, it reminds me of the ants pattern from Pre-Fall 2019. That fan-favorite collection included shirts, shorts, and dresses in an ant print, as well as a full suit that was embroidered with the same design (instead of printed).

These ant pieces were popular and can be hard to find on resale, but here are a few options I’ve sourced for you:

“Geko” green

This bright lime green ensemble turned heads on the runway, but it isn’t Tibi’s first foray into this color! In 2022, they released the Structured Knit Pencil Skirt in a similar hue, which was called “geko green” (take the spelling mistake up with Amy). I found a few around the resale sites for you:

So that’s the big answer, but how did I reach this conclusion? Elementary, my dear Watson. Read on and allow me to explain my process of deduction…

Clue #1: Straight from the source

My first clue came from Tibi Fan extraordinaire, Karen Jennings, who pointed me to her DM exchange with Amy in 2021, regarding this very question:

According to Amy, the green label was in use 1997-2006, then the swirly hummingbird appeared 2006-2012, at which point they switched to the current logo. You may notice that this differs slightly from my timeline above… something’s afoot!

Karen’s DM is a very useful starting point, but I suspect Amy might be misremembering some details, since 2012 feels a little too early for the current logo, and there’s no mention of the black background curly-cue font. So I put on my scuba gear and took a deeper dive into the archives to get an answer!

Clue #2: Cross referencing the archive

Using Women’s Wear Daily’s online archive of fashion runways (I know a lot of you use the Vogue app for this, but WWD is free!), I researched older Tibi collections and then reverse Google image searched the runway photos to find those same items available on resale websites, where I could get a look at the labels. It’s easiest to do this with bold prints, since Google can better recognize those patterns across different contexts.

Here’s an example: I looked through pictures of the Spring 2012 runway show and chose this black, green and white design as a easily recognizable sample. When I searched this image with Google Lens, it identified an eBay listing of the same product. Luckily for me, the seller included a photo of the label in their listing, so I was able to confirm that the black label was being used in Spring 2012 — not today’s current minimalist design, as Amy had misremembered.

Even if Amy got that detail wrong, I wondered if she might have the date right and just misremembered which change took place that year.

So then I went back in time another year and did the same search process with Spring 2011. I chose to search for this brown dress with a distinctive appliqué:

Although the dress Google turned up wasn’t an exact match (sleeveless instead of collared long-sleeve from the runway pic), it did have that same decorative appliqué, so I felt safe assuming it came from that same Spring 2011 collection. And there I was able to confirm the white “hummingbird” label.

I double-checked my detective work by searching for two more items from the same collections, one each from Spring 2011 and Spring 2012:

So it seems like Amy was correct that the label changed between 2011 and 2012, but it changed from the swirly hummingbird label to the black background one. The transition to our current logo must have happened at some later date! So the mystery continues…

Narrowing the search

Could I figure out when the minimalist label we all know and love first made its debut? My gut told me the label changed again sometime between 2015 and 2017, based on the collections that I’m personally familiar with. (I started paying attention to Tibi in 2021, at which point the brand was fully in its modern era.) Following that hunch, I searched those two years, 2015 and 2017, and sure enough the change seems to have happened somewhere in between.

Although the label has been written on, it’s unmistakably the current minimalist design. So at this point, I had established some outer limits at least: Spring 2015 is black label, and Spring 2017 is new label. That helped narrow down my search.

So then I moved on to 2016. There were four seasons released that year — Resort, Spring, Pre-Fall, and Fall — so I tackled them them in order. First up: Resort 2016, where I saw the black label again.

Spring 2016 was questionable… Much of that collection was solid-color basics and therefore harder for Google Lens to identify with reverse image search. With that in mind, I decided to expand my sample size per season and look at four pieces from the collection, in hopes of decreasing the margin of error.

Note the discrepancy in the labels between these four pieces:

Most of the items I found for resale have the older black label, but there was that one pale pink dress with the new label, and I doubt they would’ve mix and matched labels within a single season. This confusion might arise from Tibi reusing similar designs across multiple seasons, meaning my reverse-searched image could be from a later season. (Does anyone know if the muted pink sequin dress was re-released in a later season? Let me know in the comments!)

To be honest, I was not feeling 100% confident on any of these individual matches (i.e., maybe Tibi has done more than one version of blue sequin shorts over the years), but taken together as a collective sample, the evidence was more persuasive. My bet is that the new label had not appeared yet for the Spring 2016 seasons, but let’s see what happens next…

Moving on to Pre-Fall 2016: four different looks that all have the new minimalist label!

And then just to be safe, I went forward one more season to Fall 2016, where there’s no question that the new label had arrived:

Quod erat demonstrandum (Q.E.D.)

Based on this evidence, I feel confident concluding that Tibi switched to their current label midyear in 2016, give or take one season — either Spring or Pre-Fall collection. And that’s close enough for me. Phew!

A few more fun discoveries

While I was digging, I stumbled upon a few other interesting historical tidbits that I thought you might enjoy.

For example, check this out:

Back in 1997, when Tibi first launched in Hong Kong, Amy Smilovic originally partnered with another American expat, Olivia Jones. They worked with a textile supplier in Jakarta to develop bright prints, which they released as a capsule collection of five pieces.

According to Harpers Bazaar, they named the brand “Tibi Hyland,” after Jones’s grandmother, but “within the first year, Jones made an amicable exit and Smilovic took over the business, dropping the Hyland and keeping Tibi.”

So this “Tibi Hyland” label would have been used only in the first year, 1997! Since it was so short-lived and such a rarity, I chose not to include it in my timeline at the top of the article.

Here’s another funny piece of history:

I think this pink label must’ve been concurrent with the green one, since it has the same font and floral design, but check out the design of this price tag! Looks like one of Amy’s drawings, perhaps? And the older URL — www.tibichick.com — which is still active, but redirects to the current Tibi website. Such a different vibe from what we expect of the brand today.

I’m calling this the “hummingbird” label, but the bird only appears on the larger, vertically-oriented label that mostly appeared in jackets. Shirts, skirts, dresses, etc. would usually have a smaller, horizontally oriented label without the bird, but it’s still the same font and grey “curly-cue” elements in the background.

Yes, back in the day Tibi made its name with bold prints, inspired by Amy Smilovic’s travels in Southeast Asia, but that’s not what I’m talking about here… In the new era of Tibi, prints are few and far between, but whenever Amy and designer Tracey Bui-Amar do step up to bat with a new print, it’s sure to be a home run. (Am I doing sports analogies right?)

I could devote a whole other post to Tibi’s amazing plaids, but today I’m going to focus in on their florals. These are hardly the girlish bouquets of Laura Ashley or Marimekko’s bold blooms or Anthropologie’s ethereal blossoms. Rather, Tibi’s floral designs still align with the brand’s modernity and sense of irony.

To show you what I mean, let’s look at three of my favorite floral prints from the past few years.

The “Flora” collection from Resort 2021

I’m going to start with my personal favorite. The “Flora” print is deceptive: it looks simply like a bunch of black-eyed Susans against a white background, but upon closer inspection, you’ll see that a few flowers have cartoonish frowns:

In the original product descriptions, Tibi described the print like this:

We know, florals, for warm weather…groundbreaking. But hear us out! This custom Italian micro nylon stretch jacquard is not your does not mimic your run of the mill fauna fabrication. Let this eye-catching graphic speak for itself, styling yours with a neutral WOF.

Tibi released half a dozen pieces in this pattern, including a long-sleeve tee (“Flora On Jersey Fitted Long Sleeve T-Shirt”), pants (“Flora Jacquard Elfie Trouser”), shoes, pencil skirt, bomber jacket and oversized rugby sweater. Here’s what that looks like head-to-toe:

And here’s another IG Live where Darianne from Tibi’s St. Simon boutique wears the Flora Jacquard Oversized Bomber over the Floral On Jersey Fitted Long Sleeve T-shirt.

I have the long-sleeve tee and love it. I find that the eye almost glances over the tiny flowers, so it reads as yellow, but I get a little snicker every time I look down at my sleeve and see a disgruntled daisy.

These don’t show up super often on resale, but are worth the hunt! Personally, I think of these pieces as collector’s items.

The “Sabine” collection from Spring 2021

Next up is a fan favorite! Although officially called “Sabine,” many Tibi Fans refer to this as “the gnome print,” because of the little capped fellows hidden among the flowers. It’s so subtle that no one else will notice, and it can be our little inside joke. They released this same pattern against both black and white (light-grey) backgrounds. Here’s a close up so you can see the gnomes in each:

I had to do some major Where’s-Waldo searching to find those gnomes for those screenshots, and they’re nearly invisible from a distance. This collection included bubble skirts, maxi skirts (“Pull-On Cocoon Skirt”), strapless bralette, an open-back dress with shoulder pads (“Scallop Sleeve Long Dress”), a midi dress with an exaggerated collar (“Allonge Collar Waisted Dress”), and a one-shoulder dress.

According to this look book and video, it seems like there also might’ve been a long-sleeve collared shirt and a pair of shorts, but I’ve never come across those in the wild…

You can see that they leaned into the print’s maximalism for much of that photoshoot, but I prefer seeing these pieces layered with solid, simple shapes, like how the Sabine crop top is layered over this tee and under the cropped blazer in this photo:

How cool is that? I don’t personally own any of these pieces (yet), but that’s how I’d like to style it. That said, Dione looks pretty rad wearing the coordinated bralette and pull-on skirt in this IG Live video.

In that same video, Amy provides this analysis of the print:

So we usually do about one good print a season. And we like for that print to be really versatile, in that it can go from play to dinner and then sometimes to work… And what we love about a small print is, a small print makes it really easy to wear, right? Like you can really go big with it.

  • Black, size 6 for $280 on Poshmark — that’s too expensive! Try offering them <$200.

• Bubble Skirt:

  • White, size “S” for $97 on TRR

  • White size 4 for $238 on Poshmark — again, this price is insane. I think this should be under $150.

• Scallop Sleeve Long Dress, size 4 for $375 — waaaay too much, but it’s true that I almost never see this dress for sale

• This seller on Poshmark is bundling together the Strapless Crop Top and Maxi Skirt, both in black, size 4 for $275 — even with both pieces bundled, I still think that’s too much, but maybe I’m just a cheapskate.

The “Printed Tech Floral” collection from Pre-Fall 2018

This colorful floral reminds me of the psychedelic illustrations from “The Yellow Submarine,” but the black background somehow tones down the cheeriness just enough. It’s executed in a “lightweight tech fabrication,” which I think just means polyester? That’s what is says on the fabric tag, at least.

This collection included a skirt, joggers, shorts, and an anorak. This was before Tibi Style class started, so there isn’t a ton of info available online, but here’s some of the original styling from the Pre-Fall 2018 look book:

Of the three floral prints I’ve discussed today, this one is the most readily available on resale. Here’s what I found out there at the moment:

Rather, there’s a focus on super luxe materials and quality production, from quiet, understated brands that might not be on your radar. They’re not necessarily stylish, but they will last forever and never feel dated, with unparalleled craftsmanship and materials.

Now, I cannot afford to walk into these stores to buy their clothes new off the rack, but I always keep my eye out for these labels when thrifting or shopping resale: Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Akris, and Eskandar.

I know the temptation is to buy your basic staples from cheaper brands like Gap or Everlane, but really you should be searching for these quiet luxury brands on resale to collect wardrobe staples that will last forever and become treasured heirlooms.

1. Loro Piana

This Milan-based brand is known for their luxurious textiles, like cashmere and vicuña. Their leather goods are top-notch, too! Think buttery suede and the softest knits.

I did a little digging into the brand’s history for you: It was founded in 1924 by Pietro Loro Piana, an Italian engineer who came from a family of wool merchants. After the Second World War, his grandson Franco expanded the business to sell high-quality fabrics to overseas markets. At this point, I think they were still focused on producing textiles only, not finished products, but in the 1980s, another generation of sons, Sergio and Pier, expanded that vision and launched the brand’s first ready-to-wear collection. After almost 90 years as a family-owned business, the company was acquired by the global conglomerate LVMH in 2013. (LVMH also owns Dior, Fendi, Bulgari, Loewe, and more luxury brands than I can count.) Recently, they’ve come under fire for exploitative labor practices, which has some customers boycotting the brand, but buying secondhand somewhat sidesteps that concern.

Since Loro Piana designs their own clothing and sells their fabric to other designers, you have to look closely at the labels to figure out what you’re holding. The Loro Piana label appears inside suits from Brooks Brothers, Nordstrom, and other suit makers. That label will attest to the quality of the fabric (which is important!), but not necessarily the design or production of the actual suit.

So that’s going to be your biggest challenge when shopping for Loro Piana secondhand. Resellers on eBay and elsewhere will eagerly list their items as “Loro Piana” if they see that name anywhere, regardless of whether it’s the designer or just the fabric, so look closely and request extra images if needed. If the label says, “Fabric made by Ing. Loro Piana & C.” then that’s just the fabric, so don’t be fooled!

2. Brunello Cucinelli

Similarly, Brunello Cucinelli has built a reputation for Italian luxury. The brand was founded in 1978 by Brunello, who was son of a poor factory worker. He initially focused on women’s cashmere sweaters (“I wanted to work with cashmere, because it never gets thrown away,” he explain in this interview) and has expanded the brand over time, while still maintaining a firm commitment to not only quality but conscience. Cucinelli writes:

… my mind used to wander back to my dad’s teachings: if you are not a good person you won’t have people’s respect; the professionalism, courage and transparency of one’s actions, in other words, respect for dignity, your own and others’, are fundamental in life.

Guided by that philosophy, Brunello Cucinelli practices what he calls “humanistic capitalism,” with a commitment to sustainability and fair labor practices. Workers are paid about 20% more than industry average, working only eight hours a days in facilities that “beautiful and comfortable.” According to this article, “He has used millions of his own funds to build his company’s headquarters and factory in what was the declining hamlet of Solomeo, south of Florence. He’s built schools and a theatre, restored the 12th-century church, and revived the local wine and food artisans.” I love it!

In terms of the actually clothing, it has a similar vibe to Loro Piana, but this blog offers a helpful comparison:

If you seek a brand with a rich heritage, cutting-edge designs, and don't mind the shift towards a more mainstream appeal, Loro Piana is a perfect fit. However, if you value exclusivity, ethical craftsmanship, and a timeless approach to luxury, Brunello Cucinelli is the brand for you.

I own one cashmere sweater from Brunello Cucinelli, and even though it’s too big for me and littered with moth holes, it is still one of my favorite sweaters because of the quality and hand-feel.

For this brand, resale bargains are a little fewer and farther between. Even secondhand, many Brunello Cucinelli pieces will sell for $200 or more! Here are a few resale options I found under $100(ish):

• Charcoal sweater dress with chiffon hem, size large for $50

• Cream-colored cashmere cardigan, sizing estimated as “M” for $90

• Sheer silk blouse in grey, size small for $75

• Beige silk top with fringe detail, size small for $101

• Blue silk tank, size small for $60

• Teal silk shirt with beaded details at collar and cuff, size medium for $10 (some minor damage)

• Grey striped sheer silk top, size XS for $95

3. Akris

This is a Swiss brand with a fascinating history: in 1922, twenty-six-year-old Alice Kriemler-Schoch opened an atelier for aprons in St. Gallen, Switzerland, a city historically known for its embroidery. Her son, Max, joined the company in 1944 and rename it Akris for his mother’s initials (Alice Kriemler-Schoch).

So the son, Max, partnered with French couturiers to produce collections for the likes of Givenchy, while he and his wife built up their own distinct fashion identity. Today, Akris is helmed by the family’s third, brothers Albert and Peter Kriemler, and the brand proudly claims to be “one of the last independent fashion houses with a clear sense of purpose.” Over the past century, Akris has build a reputation for high-quality, minimalist designs.

Here’s how they describe Akris’ design philosophy:

… heritage meets progress, and elegance is expressed through subtlety rather than spectacle… clothes that are worn, not just noticed; that serve the modern woman, not distract from her… Fabric is not a backdrop to the design, but its beginning. This grounding in material sensitivity forms the basis of what [Akris] calls a sensual minimalism, that speaks in clean lines, refined proportions, and a quiet confidence.

Here’s another interesting profile written about the brand: “Luxe without a logo.”

I have an Akris cashmere-silk zip cardigan that I got as a hand-me-down years ago but only recently unlocked how to style when I realized it could function as my luxury comp for Tibi’s track jacket!

Be aware that Akris Punto is the diffusion line– more youthful designs at a lower price point. They make cute stuff, but the quality might not be quite as deluxe, so adjust how much you’re willing to pay accordingly.

Luckily, you can find many Akris pieces on resale. Here’s a sampling of what’s currently out there:

• Vintage silk top with a Mondrian-esque geometric design, size medium fro $65

• Graphic sweater, material unlisted, size 2 for $87 —I love the design but would message the seller for more info

• Lovely plaid blazer (possibly cotton-linen blend) size 8 for $28

4. Eskandar

This brand was founded in 1992 by Eskandar Nabavi, an Iranian designer based in the UK. He started out with knitwear (his grandmother taught him how to knit, and the first collection was hand-knit!) before expanding the line. Everything is very flowy, with oversized fits, muted colors, and lots of natural fibers: linen, cotton, wool. You could describe it as lagenlook, or perhaps higher quality Eileen Fischer.

Here’s how the brand’s website describes the Eskandar approach:

…inspired by the cosmopolitan blend of cultures found across Europe and Asia, eskandar transcends trends in favour of silhouettes inspired by function and tradition. Building on layers that can be removed or added as temperatures fluctuate, the collection offers a range of easy-to-wear tunics, knitwear, loose trousers and silk shirts using only natural and noble fabrics.

I own a cashmere cropped jacket and a tropical wool pant set from Eskandar, both vintage hand-me-downs that I’ve worn season after season for more than a decade now, so I can personally attest to the quality! These are truly heirloom pieces.

A full head-to-toe Eskandar outfit can look a little too chic-grandmotherly for my taste, so I tend to pair the pieces with more modern elements from my closet, like here, where I styled my Eskandar cropped jacket with a Tibi skirt.

When shopping for this brand, beware that their sizing is a little weird: they use a scale of 0-3, but some items are only produced in one size, so there’s no easy conversion. Basically, it’s all intended for an oversized fit, so I wouldn’t worry too much about the numbers, and some resellers don’t even bother listing them. Instead, I would just focus on the measurements.

Here are a few options I collected for you:

• Wool check trousers with elastic waist, size 1 for $74

• Similar brown wool trousers, size 1 for $30

• Boxy white linen shirt, size 1 for $54

• Striped cotton stand-collar shirt with a very cool pocket detail, size 0 for $70

• Merino sweater in a beautiful mocha color, $74— with some minor stains

• Grey/taupe trousers in a cashmere blend, size 2 for $70

• Orange red linen sleeveless shirt dress, size 2 for $70

• Simple white tee in pima cotton, with a nice bit of subtle embroidery, $29

So those are my tips for today! Hopefully you feel better equipped now to go treasure-hunting on eBay or in your local thrift store. A little background for today’s post: I’m on the hunt for a very specific pair of shoes from The Row, which I’m hoping to find for under $150 to wear down the aisle in November. I found a pair of The Rows’ Gala Twist Leather Mules on The Real Real, and it was love at first sight! But I didn’t move fast enough and they slipped through my fingers, leaving me on the hunt… In the meanwhile, I’ve found a bunch more that aren’t quite right for me, but I thought you might enjoy!

An intro to the brand

I’m just the right age to have grown up adoring the Olsen twins, every step of the way: from Full House to The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley and every direct-to-video movie. My middle school French teacher would show us Passport to Paris at least once a semester! But I’ll admit, I aged out of their escapades around the same time they began their foray into fashion, with their clothing line for Wal-Mart in the the early 2000s.

Fast forward a couple decades and now they’re absolute style icons! Not only did they become synonymous with a new era of boho chic, they launched one of today’s top “quiet luxury” brands, The Row. Their work with The Row has won multiple awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The brand has been described as “an American answer to Loro Piana and Phoebe Philo-era Celine,” according to Business of Fashion. Think minimal designs, luxe materials, and the chillest chic vibes.

I will share the disclaimer, though, that I don’t (yet) own anything from The Row before, so my familiarity with the brand is limited and based mainly on word of mouth. If you’re a fan of The Row, please chime in down and share your thoughts down in the comments!

Noelle suede loafer

This looks like a comfortably chic flat, fabricated in suede with a very low block heel. I found a few of these around the internet in different sizes and colors.

• Navy blue in size 35.5 for $65 on Depop

• Beige in size 36.5 for $49 from The Real Real, in need of some TLC, if you have a good cobbler?

• Beige in size 37.5 for $71 from TRR

• Rosy pink in size 40 for $109 from TRR

• Navy blue in size 40 for $120 from Noihsaf Bazaar (Has anyone bought from them before?)

• White in size 40.5 for $75 on Poshmark, but they’re looking pretty grungy so I would try to bargain the price down and see if you can get them cleaned professionally.

Camil suede pumps

The heel is too high for me personally, but I love the look of these and how that dainty bow contrasts with the chunky heel. I think they’re from 2018, but again, I’m no brand historian… just a dedicated Googler!

I found the original product details on La Garconne: “Black suede pumps with a ties at a cutout high vamp. Slightly squared pointed toe. Tonal topstitching throughout. Suede-wrapped heel. Made in Italy. We recommend taking your regular size.”

And here’s how Modesens describes them: “These Camil pumps from The Row are completed in an opulent black suede to channel elegance in ease. The back tie-up fastening adds a decorative edge while the pointed-toe and block-heel ensure comfort.”

I found these in two different sizes for you:

Gala Twist leather mules

This is the shoe I’m looking for! I love the elegant minimal silhouette, don’t you? And the 3” heel looks manageable… I will find them someday! Until then, here are some in the wrong size and wrong color. 😣

Capri slides

I like the texture of these, with the folds of leather weaving in and out of the straps, almost like a basket. I spotted a black pair of these on eBay a few weeks ago, but they sold quickly. These are size 37 for $96 from TRR.

Flora wedge

I believe these lovely wedge mules are called the Flora Wedge Mules, possibly from 2019. I found them in a size 39 on eBay, currently going for $95 with zero bids so far, and the auction ends tomorrow!

Meera sandals

These ivory sandals remind me of incredibly chic, minimalist huaraches. I tracked down the original product details from Modesens: “The Row's 'Meera' sandals have been woven in Italy from strips of supple ecru textured-leather. They're set on flat soles with squared toes and have elasticated slingback straps that ensure comfort.” More details about this design here. These are size 35 for $90 on Depop.

Bea mules

These are so weird and gorgeous! The Bea Mule has a cashmere upper and leather sole, for a super cozy comfit fit. It’s embroidered with a whimsical floral design and adorned with tassels and pompoms for a truly special look. Not my size, otherwise I might be distracted from my primary quest for the wedding shoes of my dreams. You can buy in size 36 for $100 on Poshmark.

Haya mules

I think these are the Haya mules from 2018? You can see over here that the Haya have a distinctly sculptural wooden heel, but it’s a little hard to see in the images provided on this Poshmark listing (Size 38 for $70) so I would ask for additional photos to confirm.

Five Tibi bargains I spotted this morning, as I readjust to reality after a week’s vacation and a special Tibi-ful weekend with fellow fashionistas in town for New York Fashion Week. I didn’t make it to any of the official events, but meeting up with fellow fans is the best part anyway, imho. Now I’ve still got Tibi on the mind, so without further ado, here is today’s Tibi-themed resale roundup:

1. Chalky Drape Plashet Jogger

I found these pants on ThredUp in size XL for $62.

So many Tibi fans are obsessed with the “Chalky Drape” fabrication, so I thought I’d start off with another of those! Tibi describes the material as a “Japanese crafted poly blend” and their “easiest travel fabrication.” When you’re hunting for Chalky Drape, check the fabric tag: many of Tibi’s signature fabrications have a recognizable composition that I think of like a thumbprint. Chalky Drape should be 98% Polyester and 2% Polyurethane.

These are the Plashet Joggers from Fall 2021, and you can see the original product details here. The ivory color was originally referred to as “butter.” It came with a matching top, which I know some of you are hunting for, so I’m keeping my eyes peeled!

2. Chalky Drape Zip Up Jumpsuit

Piggy-backing off the last one, I found a few bargains on the jumpsuit version of those same joggers, also from Fall 2021. Here’s the original product webpage where you can read more details, and here’s one of my secret tips: you can also read product reviews on Rent the Runway! Just keep in mind that the reviewers over there aren’t necessarily Tibi Fans and thus aren’t familiar with the brand’s intended oversize fit. For example, one reviewer wrote: “Baggy, misshapen? Ghostbusters? Sure. But I felt like Rihanna all day.” Well that’s good! 😂

3. Structured Crepe Sleeveless Top

This top was a favorite of many Tibi fans back in the day! Tibi has done a few pieces in this material, and it’s “thumbprint” fabric composition is 94% polyester and 6% elastane. I can’t seem to find the original Tibi product page (if you can, please share in the comments!) but it came in black and white, and they might have even released in a few different seasons.

4. Tropical Wool(?) Vest

The Real Real can really suck at photos and descriptions. I suspect they’re using more AI these days to generate their listings, which leads to more errors such as this: it’s a buttoned vest that they’re misidentifying as a sleeveless top… and thus underpricing!

See the listing here, size “S” for only $32! They don’t list the fabric content, so hard to say if this is one of the tropical wool vests, but the seams, buttons, and hardware on the back look the same. The sizing will be a gamble too, because these vests were originally sized numerically and who know what “small” means. But for $32, maybe worth the risk?

Tibi seems to have taken down the original product page for the Tropical Wool Vest in black, but here it is in another color so you can check details on fit, sizing, etc.

And here’s another vest, size 0 for $69. This one is definitely tropical wool!

5. Charlie Men’s Slim Shirt

This is another one of those items that Tibi confusingly describes as “men’s” when it’s actually designed for women. They’ve experimented with men’s and unisex lines a couple times in the past, but this ain’t it! This is just their standard slim cut button up shirt.

These Charlie shirts (and the Gabes, too) are such great closet staples that they don’t often come up for resale. I think people tend to keep them forever! This one is available on The Real Real in size XS for $60 in the “lemon ice” color from a few years ago, I believe Spring 2024. This shirt is part of Tibi’s fundamentals collection, so they almost never go on sale. Here’s the original product info from Tibi.

I will say, the Charlie is not for me personally, because the slim cut doesn’t work for my curvier figure and shorter torso. When I tried it on in store, the bottom couple buttons were pulled too taught across my hips, so I stick with Charlie’s big brother, the oversized Gabe shirt, which I swear by! If you’re slimmer or straighter than me, this is a bargain worth jumping on.

Most of what I’m sharing today comes from The Real Real, just because that’s where I happened to look first this morning and found more than enough for a Substack post without having to move on to my other usual sources (Poshmark, eBay, Depop, ThredUp, Vestiaire, etc.), but I do want to be clear that I don’t have a deal with any of these platforms and will never use affiliate links.

If any of you have frequented The Real Real (TRR) then you probably share my frustration: great deals can be had there, but the photography is sloppy, the descriptions are unreliable, and the styling can sometimes be hilarious. So I’m doing the hard work for you and scrolling through pages of items, picking out the mislabeled gems, and providing more accurate information about these pieces.

So, let’s jump into it!

1. Grey Denim Double Waisted Denim Skirt

Tibi keeps coming back to the double-waisted look in different iterations, but I believe this was one of the earliest, from Spring 2022. It’s a Japanese denim made of 100% cotton. TRR is calling this a “medium” but the original sizing is numeric like jeans (e.g., I wear a size 28), so I’m linking to the original description from Tibi’s website, where you can compare the listed measurements to Tibi’s sizing chart.

Alts: I found a few more listed on TRR, with annoying variance in measurements, so buying beware.

• Another “medium” for $85

• One more “medium” (with smaller measurements) for $93

• The classic blue wash version, listed as “small” for $85

2. Soft Lambswool Half Cardigan

The half cardigan is an amazingly versatile piece from Fall 2024. It’s 100% lambswool, which Tibi advertises as “soft,” but I would say might have a slight itch for those with very sensitive skin. Here’s the original item description for more info, and here’s an episode of Tibi Style Class where Amy models the same piece. And here’s another video with Keturah explaining how she would style the ivory color.

I have the Spring 2022 version in light green and am always hunting for the “dijon” color— one of my holy grail items!

Here’s a thought for the DIY crafters among you (or those who know a good tailor): you could buy this sweater and add your own fringe (such as this from Michael’s) to replicate the hugely popular, hard to find Soft Sweater Fringed Half Cardigan from Winter 2024, with the added advantage that your DIY version will be 100% wool instead of the wool-poly blend that Tibi used for that piece.

Alt: Here is an interesting flawed find that someone might be interested in, as a “fixer-upper.” This appears to be an even earlier iteration of the half cardigan, with a cute little button detail on the front pocket. TRR doesn’t know the fabric content, and there are a few stains, but $36 ain’t bad if you want to approach this as a craft project. Maybe you could cover the stains with embroidery, as I recently did with a stained shirt.

3. Sheer Gauze Baby T-Shirt

Tibi released a bunch of these sheer tops in pastel colors for Spring 2023. I recommend checking out the runway show, because this is some of my all-time favorite Tibi styling. Here’s a Style Class video where they go in depth about styling advice, and here’s the original product page from Tibi’s website. It’s 100% poly, which I know bothers some people — myself usually among them, but this fabrication is more breathable than I expected. (I have the oversized tee instead of the baby version.)

4. Metallic Nylon Wilt Joggers

These were one of my first Tibi purchases, and they’re so cool! It came in gold and silver, which are both surprisingly versatile colors! It has a crispy matte finish, so you can almost treat it as a neutral color like khakis. Here’s the original description from Tibi’s website, so you can reference measurements etc. It’s made of nylon, so I have issues with breathability and getting too sweaty in the humid heat of New York, but I’ve heard others say it’s fine in dryer heat.

• Gold size L for $126, which I think it too expensive, but wanted to give you the option

5. Eco Poplin Strappy Balloon Peplum Top

I love the structure of this top and the built in tension: the balloon peplum feels femme yet modern, the notched neckline feels very sculptural, and the low back is so sexy. I can’t find the original listing from Tibi, but here’s one from The Garmentory with more details.

Alts: I found a few more versions for you in different sizes and colors.

• White size “M” for $52 (check the measurements, since original sizing was numeric not letters)

6. Sculpted Shoulder Sweatshirt

This is such a cool piece, truly one of the elevated basics that Tibi does best. What a strikingly modern silhouette! Tbh I’m a little confused what season this is from, because on Tibi’s website I can only find the navy and ivory versions from Winter 2022, whereas this one definitely looks black. Maybe it’s an earlier or later iteration?

Alts: there are so many of these available on resale, I cannot list them all, but here are just a few in different sizes. One thing I would look out for, though, is that some customers may have removed the shoulder pads for a less exaggerated look. If possible, enquire!

7. Chalky Drape Squiggly Neck Long Sleeve Top

Another utterly modern take on a basic. I know everyone and their mother is looking for the squiggle neck tank, but do consider this long-sleeve alternative from Fall 2022. Lots of Tibi fans rave about the chalky drape fabrication, but I personal haven’t put hand to cloth so won’t comment. Here’s the original description from Tibi.

Alts: This is not a bargain by my definition, I did find the black version in size 0 for $137 on Poshmark.

8. Sage Crinkle Lyocell Tank

I love the color and texture here, and I think it would make a great basic for layering. Here’s the original description from Tib’s website. This top was part of their Fall 2022 collection. Full disclosure: I haven’t tried this piece on before, and I always worried that with my short torso the under-boob stitching would hit too low on my chest and look awkward… Have you tried it? 9. Oliver Cotton Stretch Tricotine Sculpted Blazer

I love a collarless blazer for a streamlined look. This was part of Tibi’s Spring 2024 collection, and I appreciate that the color is called “grey moon.” This is a cotton blend (97% Cotton, 3% Elastane) which Tibi describes as “crafted from a luxe Italian cotton blend twill with stretch and a crisp and smooth hand feel.” You can see the original product page here, and here is a Styling Class video where you can see Keturah modeling the piece.

Alts: Omg I swear I saw a ton of these flood the market a few months ago, but now I can’t find a single one at a reasonable price!

10. Sculpted Short Sleeve Sweatshirt

Another elevated basic in one of those ring 3 colors that Tibi does so well! This 100% cotton sweatshirt is in “light stone,” from Spring 2024. Here’s the original product page where you can consult more reliable measurements, and here’s how Keturah styles it in a Style Class video.

Bonus: Here are the matching Cecil sweatpants in size M for $94 or size S for $87. (Should I should do another bargain round up focused just on Tibi sweatpants?)

11. Flora On Jersey Fitted Long Sleeve T-Shirt

This is one of my all time favorite prints from Tibi. Amy doesn’t mess with print very often anymore, but when she does, she hits it out of the park! The yellow daisies are so fine that you eye almost glances over them, making it read as nearly a solid yellow. Hidden amongst the flowers are a few little frowny faces that always make me smile when I spot one on my sleeve. Here’s the original product description for your reference. The material is a poly blend (98% Polyamide 2% Elastane) which usually I would be opposed to, but this feels great on the skin, and I can honestly recommend it!

Tibi released a whole little capsule collection with this print in Resort 2021, including pants, shoes, skirt, bomber and rugby sweater. Here they are discussing the print in an old Style Class video. (Maybe I’ll do a post about that some day…) And I love how Lauren (@todayshegotdressed) styles the top here.

12. Tibi Sabine Strapless Bralette

Another one of my favorite ironic prints from Tibi! Fans refer to it as “the gnome print” because of the little capped fellows hidden among the flowers. It’s so subtle that no one else will notice, and it can be our little inside joke. I cannot find the original product page from Tibi’s website, but here you can see Amy wearing the dress version of this print. And here again is Lauren (@todayshegotdressed) with some immaculate styling inspo for wearing the bralette over a solid base layer. (Can you tell I’m a fan of Lauren’s style?)

Alts: Only one affordable alternative for this piece, a size 4 for $72.

13. Metallic Jersey Ruched Top

An elevated take on the base layer long sleeve tee. I love how subtle the shimmer is, making the color almost work as a neutral ring 2 color. Check your measurements carefully, since the original sizing is supposed to be numeric but TRR is calling this a “small. It looks like Tibi has taken down the original webpage for this item, but here’s more info from The Garmentory.

14. Tulipe All Over Jersey Fitted Long Sleeve T-Shirt

Last but not least, another one of my favorite printed tees. You can check out the original product description here. I picked up one of these last year and have gotten a ton of wear out of it. I layer it under blazers, sweaters, open button-up shirts—you name it! I got a size S, and heads up that it’s a bit tight fitting, but I think that’s intended. The loose doodle looks so organic, and the pale blue works great with my eyes, if I do say so myself. 😜

In honor of the cooling temperatures, here’s a round up of the best sweaters I’ve seen lately around the internet, all under $100(ish):

1. Bottega Veneta’s ketchup & mustard

I love this color block sweater from Bottega Veneta for sale on Poshmark. It’s 100% wool and made in Italy, so the quality can’t be beat. The seller notes a few small holes, so buyer beware, but could be a fun DIY project if you’re up for the challenge! With that in mind, I would try to get the price down to <$45.

2. Dries van Noten’s silver squiggle

If you continue following my substack (as I hope you do!), you’ll learn that I love Dries van Noten. He’s one of my favorite designers, always creative, and this sweater from Poshmark is no exception. What a fun pop of color, for anyone in need of some extra dopamine, and that silver squiggle will look so good layered under a jacket. The fabric is listed as a wool-alpaca-poly blend, but the poly is only 3% so I’m guessing that’s just the metallic embroidered. There is a comment from the seller saying they don’t recommend this for those with very sensitive skin, so you’ve been warned. I would probably style this over a white crewneck tee anyway– for comfort, sweat, and a pop of white at the neckline.

3. Tibi’s asymmetry

This is a good deal on Poshmark for Tibi’s Cashmere Silk Asymmetrical Cardigan… if you can squeeze into the XXS. This piece is fitted, so I would not recommend sizing down. The fabric is a blend of cashmere, wool, and silk, for an elevated basic with an fun twist. The extra buttons up the neckline create extra opportunities for styling, if you want to button this around your neck as a scarf, or maybe a funky shawl? Go nuts. When Tibi came out with this in Spring 2023 (I think?) there was also a “super cropped” version, but I believe this is the regular length one.

Bonus bargain: here is the super cropped one in the reddish-brown “tamarind,” size M for $94 on TRR.

4. Dries van Noten’s pretty print

Another Dries sweater! This one has some flaws and is priced accordingly, but I love the print and could imagine it working with so many outfits. Although the fabric composition isn’t listed, it looks like a cotton knit to my eye. I would style it how Tibi has been showing their “Striped Perfect Unisex Long Sleeve T-Shirt” from last season: a pop of red in a print that doesn’t grab too much attention, while adding interest to any look. Layer it under a blazer, tie it around your waist, or throw it over your shoulders. See Emma here, or Davina here.

5. agnès b. wings of desire

Aren’t these little wings the coolest? I spotted this creative sweater on TRR. Side note: I have a soft spot for the French brand, agnès b. because when I was younger, my mom had a friend of a friend with an adult daughter living in Italy, who would periodically send hand-me-downs across the ocean. I never met this stylish expat, but I treasured her clothes, including blazers and sweaters from agnès b. It was my first introduction to high-end European brands, and even as a young teen I could feel the difference in quality. This winged sweater is 100% merino wool and seems like a fun piece for any adventurous dresser out there.

6. Dries van Noten’s glittery basic

This metallic, v-neck sweater from TRR is a great elevated basic, as I would expect from Dries van Noten. Consider this a tool to zhuzh up your creative pragmatist look. It looks like a plain old grey sweater, but it sparkles! How fun! This one is size large but I wouldn’t mind an oversized fit here, with lots of styling options. You could tie it around your waist or your shoulders or your neck, wherever you want some sparkles! The material isn’t listed, but I would guess it’s a poly blend, based on similar pieces I’ve seen from the brand.

7. Celine’s chic shell

Gosh, does anyone do minimalist elegance better than Celine? This sleeveless sweater from TRR is such a great understated piece. It is a wool-silk-cashmere blend, so you can bet that fabric feels deluxe. I love the sculptural element in front, a subtle overlap that extends from the neck to hem. Can you imagine this styled with jeans and a leather jacket? Talk about Phoebe Philo chic!

8. MM6 Maison Margiela’s ruffle-fest

I’m digging this funky design from MM6, spotted on eBay. Keep in mind that MM6 is Margiela’s diffusion brand, so slightly lower quality materials. The fabric tag has been removed, and while the seller guesses it’s a wool-silk blend, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s actually poly. There’s also a small snag on the back, but doesn’t seem too visible in the photos. The seller is accepting offers on this piece, so I would try to get it for <$80, given the flaw and unknown fabric. But wouldn’t this look cool with jeans or a sculptural skirt?

9. Celine color blocks

This sweater I spotted on Depop is cute but has flaws, hence the lower price. I spy with my little eye at least one hole in the red sleeve, but you should ask the seller for more details. The fabric content isn’t listed; since it’s Celine, I would guess it’s at least a merino blend, but might as well ask about that, too, when you reach out. Sure, this is a risky purchase, but I love the design: pink and red are a very trendy combo, and I’m always a sucker for heather grey. If you’re handy with needle and thread (and get more info from the seller), then this might be worth the risk?

10. Tibi’s “Swiss cheese” sweater

I adore Tibi’s Trou Trou Alpaca Sweater and consider this a good deal for a collector’s item. When it came out in Fall 2022, Tibi described it as “beautiful natural Peruvian baby alpaca with soft Merino wool blends,” but I’ve heard through the grapevine that it can be itchy, so if you’re sensitive, be warned! That said, I think this would look great over a colorful or printed top, which would provide a barrier layer. You can see the original Tibi listing here for more info. Also check out Rose a.k.a. Yes, I was a Modest Mouse fan, but no, I don’t plan to shell out $100+ for the current reunion tour. I need to save that money for clothes and craft supplies!

Which gets us back to the topic at hand: A few months ago, I found an embroidery starter kit that someone was giving away on the curb, so I brought it home and have been rediscovering my love of this craft. I’ve worked on a few projects so far that I’d like to share.

Tomato shirt 🍅

In July, I was invited to a “tomato-themed” birthday party. I didn’t want to buy something new just to fit the theme, so I looked in my closet and pulled out a men’s button-up shirt that I’d been saving for just this sort of occasion. No, it wasn’t tomato-themed… it was stained. It’s a nice quality, pure cotton shirt that I got for free because of a small stain on the front, so I wanted to sew something over it and was just waiting for inspiration to strike.

I pulled up a few reference images on my phone and got to work. Usually, I like to embroider freehand, meaning I don’t sketch out an outline beforehand. I find this helps me keep the image looser and more organic feeling, which is the vibe I’m going for. You see, I know I lack the skills to make anything look perfect, so instead I lean into the imperfect vibe.

After I finished the first tomato and covered up that unsightly stain, I was still feeling inspired so I kept going and added more!

When it came time for the party, I paired this shirt with an old floral jumpsuit and a pair of red Tibi heels, which I recently got on Poshmark for a bargain. Here’s the final look:

I had so much fun with this project and got loads of compliments at the party! And the best part is, I have continued to wear the shirt and get more use out of it. I think this one is a keeper.

Floral pocket 💐

I had embroidery on the mind, so I jumped at the opportunity when my fiancé mentioned an annoying stain in one of his dress shirts. It looks like he left an uncapped highlighter in his shirt pocket? I can help!

This one was a little harder because I didn’t want to sew all the way through the shirt, thereby making the pocket unusable. If I had a sewing machine, I probably should’ve removed the pocket, embroidered the flowers, and then sewn it back on when completed. As it was, I had to carefully sew in and out of the pocket for each stitch. Anyway, I’m pleased with the final result, and so is the fiancé. He’s gotten compliments every time he wears it out or to work, and I am quick to take the credit!

What should I embroider next? I have a few half finished sweater embroidery projects waiting to be picked back up again, and now that the weather is finally turning autumnal, maybe it’s time to circle back. I’ll keep you updated!

Personally, I use Acloset, but don’t have any real loyalty to the app. I know plenty of folks who use Indyx instead, and that seems like it might actually be the better UX. To be perfectly honest, I only went with Acloset because it was the free option when I first started logging my outfits in 2022, and by the time they switched to a subscription model, I had already uploaded most of my wardrobe, so they had me hooked.

But whatever app you use — or even if you’re just taking daily photos — I’ve found it hugely useful to look back at what I’ve worn over the past month. With some distance, I can reflect on what worked and what didn’t, what outfits I want to repeat or tweak. This is a practice I’ve been doing for years, but now I hope to make it a monthly occurrence on my Substack.

That’s the full month at a glance, and as you can see, I have a lot of favorites! It is very unlike me to have any days left blank in my Acloset calendar, let alone four consecutive days, but I was out of commission with Covid for a week, so gimme a break!

Now let’s zoom in on what worked, what didn’t, and what conclusions I can draw.

What worked

Hmm I’m annoyed how Substack cropped those images, but I guess this is all a learning curve, so please bear with me. I loved this outfit from earlier in the month! It was a little too hot for the dog days of summer, but I felt immeasurably cool. The inspiration cam from Rachel Solomon (pictured on the right) but still felt very me. The mix of preppy staples (pleated chinos procured through Tibi fans and a pearl necklace from an estate sale) with the punk net top from Dries van Noten and the sporty Tevas-style sandals (which unfortunately you can’t see here) are just perfection. 🤌

Grrr… does anyone know how to resize images in this “gallery” setting? I don’t need the pics to be full-screen, so the gallery option seems promising, but I hate how it’s auto-cropping!

As for the actual outfit, I loved this look inspired by Aastha’s experiments with cobalt (see her look on the right), so I recreated/reinterpreted her outfit using items from my own closet. The only cobalt I currently own is this awful quality H&M smocked tube top that I bought 4 years ago, before I’d sworn off fast fashion. I kind of hate wearing it and find the smocking itchy, but I haven’t discarded it yet because I know the color can be useful, and sure enough, it works here! I think this is my sign to upgrade to a better quality alternative and recycle this one into a DIY project.

I love the dusty “deep violet” shade of Aastha’s blazer from Tibi, and this whole colorway is on my radar for resale or Tibi’s end of season deep discounts in January, but for now, I can made do with my older cotton blazer in this sky blue color, which Tibi calls “blue breeze.” Note for next month: I don’t wear this jacket enough! To be honest, I didn’t end up wearing it much longer than it took to snap this picture, because early August was way too hot for extra layers. But I want to repeat this fit soon now that temperatures are dropping.

This outfit was so simple, but it felt so good! In Acloset it didn’t look like the colors would go together as well as it ended up working, so that was a pleasant surprise and reminder to sometimes put down the phone in favor of the physical closet. I think the Hannayoo Works earcuff does a lot of heavy lifting here, too. I can always count on this little dancing buddy to elevate a look from basic to chic. I should make that effort more often.

This was a great outfit. When I posted this pic on Instagram, someone commented, “This looks like it feels like you (if that makes sense),” and yes, it totally does! The shirt and jeans are both secondhand vintage Dries van Noten, and the shoes I bought from someone I follow on IG who was clearing her closet.

My fiancé always teases me by calling these my “JNCO jeans” but whatever, baggy is back. He’s right that they are a couple sizes too big for me, but I’ve had trouble figuring out the sizing for Dries jeans so erred on the larger size with these, and that’s what belts are for! Specifically, my fiancé’s belt that I have commandeered (rather than spend $245 on Tibi’s “classic men’s leather belt”).

My only reservation here: I think the outfit could’ve pushed a step further with a necklace or ear cuff. Next time!

What didn’t work as well

None of these outfits are bad, per se, but they don’t sing like the favorites I’ve highlighted above. And lining them up side by side I can immediately notice a pattern: they feel sloppy! Wrinkled and unstyled. The approach here feels like: top + bottom = outfit. Nothing special, even though some of the individual pieces are actually quite special! (Like that silk top from Dries in the middle.)

This is a recurring problem for me, because: (1) I am too lazy to iron anything ever, and that’s not going to change; and (2) I like looking laid back and chill, but how to balance that without feeling messy?

Let’s take each of these looks one by one:

• In the first look, white tee and white jeans should read as effortlessly chic but instead come across as just… no effort. I knew I wasn’t going to get the iron out, so I added an ear cuff to try and make up for the sloppiness, but that wasn’t enough. In hindsight, I think part of the problem is that neither the tee or jeans have a point of view. They’re both cheaper basics, from Everlane and Roucha, respectively, and I’ve learned (for me at least) that basic + basic = basic² and nothing more. I think either piece could’ve worked better if paired with a more elevated, designed partner. Or I could’ve put more thought into the styling, maybe with a belt or another layer. The earcuff is too small here to make enough of a difference, but maybe a necklace could’ve helped?

• The second look is dealing with a different problem, since both the shorts (Tibi) and blouse (Dries) are elevated and interesting pieces, and I really liked the mismatched prints here. I think the problem here was just not enough thought into the styling: I could’ve spent another minute adjusting the tuck, and that would’ve made all the difference. Also, I might need to admit that these shorts don’t fit me quite right… the elastic waist is super comfortable, but they ride up when I walk. Someone explained that this is probably because there isn’t enough room in the seat for my big bottom. Maybe time to resell?

• The third look has the same issue: just needed a little more thought into the styling. It felt totally fine at the time — I was recovering from a week of being sick in bed and not getting dressed at all, so this felt like effort relatively speaking — but looking back through the tight competition of A+ looks in August, this one just seems blah. The brooch was a nice touch, but it still looks like pajamas plus a brooch. Maybe an asymmetrical or French tuck would’ve helped, plus a belt?

Lessons learned for next time

My general conclusion this month (and to be fair, most months) is that I should put a tiny bit more effort into the styling. Even just adding a piece of jewelry or belt can make all the difference to elevate a look, but in the day to day grind I often feel like I can’t be bothered.

But it’s a tough balance, since “chill” is core to my style and larger vibe. If a look is too styled, then I don’t feel like myself. Half the time I put on a bracelet or tie a scarf around my waist, I end up taking it off within an hour because it feels too fussy or gets in the way. So how can I look more polished while keeping the overall vibe chill?

I also need to be realistic about who I am and how much effort I can be bothered to put into daily outfits. I’m not going to transform overnight into someone who irons her tee shirts, no matter how much my mom wishes otherwise. So is there another way I can achieve that polish? I think a key for me might be leaning into tailored items that bring a built-in polish, like pleated trousers or a blazer.

Just some I’ll give a try for September.

I may be a shopping addict, but my favorite place to shop is my own closet. (This also helps with the guilt complex I have around overconsumption, but more on that in another post…)

This is one of my favorite genres of posts from other accounts, so I thought I would do one of my own. Hope it gives you some ideas, too!

1. Dries van Noten, Spring 2025

I love how the boutique Santa Fe Dry Goods styled this outfit from Dries van Noten’s Spring 2025 season. I don’t own any of these items, but I took at look at my closet for similar colors and vibes, and here’s what I came up with:

The jacket is secondhand Jil Sander, and the shirt is a newly acquired vintage Dries van Noten button up. (Mine is actually slightly different in real life – collarless with breast pockets – but I haven’t had a chance to photograph it properly yet, so currently using a slightly differently picture as a placeholder in my Acloset app.) The pants are the only thing bought new, from the latest Tibi sale.

It’s been too warm in New York to wear this outfit out yet, but the weather is finally cooling enough for light jackets, so maybe I’ll take this look for a test drive in the coming week!

Unfortunately, I recently got rid of three pairs of pants that would’ve been a better color match for these Dries ones… I guess it’s kind of my favorite pant color, so I had a lot of options, but I’ve been gained some weight in the past couple years and none of them were fitting quite right anymore. They’d been haunting me from the closet, making me feel bad about myself whenever I tried them on and was reminded that they just weren’t as comfortable anymore, so I finally said, “Goodbye, thank you for your service!” and resold them online or handed down to friends. I was sad to see them go, but it felt like the right move, and now I’m searching for a replacement in a larger size!

2. Tibi Fall 2025, as styled by Grace

Grace is a stylist from Tibi’s SoHo boutique, and she’s one of my favorite sources of inspiration on Instagram. Here she’s modeling this season’s celery slip skirt, cashmere tee, Alan slingback heels, and the Bonded Twill Sculpted Workmen Jacket — none of which I own or can afford at full price. So time to pull out my closet app and see how I can recreate this color scheme with what I already own.

I’m head over heels for Tibi’s new celery color this season, but I’ll be waiting until it hits the resale market eventually. For now, I do have these older yellow twill carpenter jeans that I got on resale a few years ago, originally Tibi SS2019 I believe. They were originally a brighter neon yellow, but the color has faded after a few too many trips through the washer dryer, so they’re more of a muted pastel now. I’m frequently at a loss for how to style them without looking like some kind of Old Navy commercial from the 1990s, but I think this could work!

I’m imagining it here with the grey tank from Easy Standard that I recently got on ThredUp after a friend recommended the brand, and an older Everlane cotton sweater, which I’ve always felt is toughened up by the metal zip. And then for red shoes, I either have these jelly flats I bought from someone on Instagram, or these Tibi heels I bought on Poshmark earlier in the summer.

3. Saint Laurent, Fall 2025

I love everything about this look: the colors, the heritage craftsmanship, the mismatched plaids, the friction between masculine and feminine. I want to eat it up! So lemme see what I can do…

One of the key elements I wanted to emulate here is the contrast between the neon orange camisole and the very masculine, heavy plaid. I pulled out this vintage Tibi silk tank that I got on eBay and Tibi’s Jett Suiting Pleated Wrap Skirt from Fall 2023 that I found at a local consignment shop earlier this summer. I’m not capturing the mixed patterns in this look, but I think I could add a check blazer when the weather gets cooler. In the original Saint Laurent photo, the model’s feet are cropped out, so I can’t tell how they styled her shoes, but to make my look more casual, I’m going with my white Birkenstocks.

Okay, here’s how it looked:

Not bad! I’m a little disappointed that this cami is so tight across the bust, but that’s the risk with buying secondhand over the internet: this is old-label Tibi when they sized things smaller, and I bought it for cheap enough ($20) that it isn’t worth the hassle of returning. I think it still works, and I’ll try this outfit again in the autumn when I can layer a brown blazer on top!

Allow me to introduce myself.

I'm a New York-based clothes hound with a limited budget and conflicted feelings about consumerism. I try to buy mostly high-quality secondhand and spend a lot of time trawling resale sites online. I love the thrill of the hunt more than my wallet can afford, so I want to share my finds with a wider audience, in hopes that you’ll save me from myself and buy these gems so I don’t have to.

Testing the waters on Instagram

For the past year, I’ve been trying to post my outfit almost every day over on Instagram. I’d read some article about the benefits of active social media use over pass scrolling (although now that I’m trying to find it again, I’m seeing new research that shows both are bad for our mental health) and decided to start posting regularly, rather than just mindlessly, endlessly scrolling.

At first, I told myself, “I’ll start posting on Instagram once I get a new mirror… better lighting… a more flattering selfie set-up…” But I realized I needed to get over those barriers and just start, even if imperfectly. I set up a new account, where I could experiment without the pressure of “what will my friends, family, coworkers think?” My first post wasn’t even a particularly good outfit; I just needed to break the seal and get going. Soon, I was in the habit of snapping a few pics in the smudged mirror of my cramped bathroom with bad lighting. Whatever, I was doing it!

Since that first post in November, I’ve been fairly consistent. Sometimes I type a longer reflection in the caption, but other days I don’t have the time or motivation, so just a picture will suffice. I’m learning not to “let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”

And let me tell you, it’s proven so rewarding! I don’t have a particularly large following, but that was never the point. There are about a dozen people who I interact with regularly over DMs or texts. Some of these new friends I’ve met in person, while others still exist only on screens, but they make me feel more connected and part of a caring community. They have been an unexpected source of joy, inspiration, and support. In fact, it was one of them who reached out unprompted and encouraged me to start my own substack:

My first thought: Absolutely not! Who has time for that? I can’t write and edit and illustrate and proofread weekly posts! But in those negative thoughts, I recognized the same voice that had kept me from Instagram. It won’t be perfect, so why even try? How cringe! And 270 IG posts later, I know that voice is wrong, so why should I let it stop me now?

What to expect here

I don’t quite know what will come of this substack, what direction it will take me, but I’m ready to give it a try! A few things you can expect for starters:

• musings on personal style and how I approach getting dressed

• craft projects and my unskilled sewing

• links to resale bargains I find across the internet

• maybe even some relevant movies and books!

So here we go. This will definitely be imperfect. As evidence, see my confused text messages to Aastha asking her to explain the difference between Substack profiles and publications. 😅
